Only 20 percent of Louisiana homes have flood insurance, and the rate is even worse for areas that were hit by floods this week.
According to Realtor.com, only around 12 percent of homes in both Tangipahoa Parish and East Baton Rouge Parish have flood insurance. St. Helena Parish’s flood insurance rate is just 1 percent. Those and 17 other parishes were declared federal disasters by FEMA.
Flood insurance can get expensive, especially in coastal cities, and many homeowners are unaware that floods, the most common natural disaster, aren’t covered by regular homeowners insurance.
