Better unemployment rates and lower costs of living have given two inland cities an edge over more traditional tech sectors along the coasts.
According to CNBC, Provo, Utah, and Omaha, Nebr., had the lowest annualized average unemployment rates in the nation last year, and both have cheap office rent rates per square foot, at $18.64 and $18.34. Also, with an average apartment rent of $857, workers are able to stretch an average salary more than they could in, say, San Francisco.
Omaha, known as “Silicon Prairie,” is home to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and three other Fortune 500 companies. Provo, the “Silicon Slopes,” has start-ups like Vivint Smart Home and InsideSales.com.
