New houses have gotten bigger and bigger over the last few decades. Now builders are starting to reel back the sizes a bit.
According to the NAHB, the median single-family square floor area declined from 2,465 in the first quarter this year to 2,392 square feet in the second. The average square footage for new homes dropped from 2,658 to 2,616 square feet for the second quarter.
New single-family homes are still much more spacious than they were in 2000, when the median floor area was a little more than 2,000 square feet, and the average was just north of 2,200 square feet.
