After Deadly Weekend, FLASH Calls For Better Codes To Withstand Tornadoes

With a recent violent weather outbreak in the U.S. that caused more tornado deaths in one weekend than in the entire year of 2016, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) called for an examination of better building in tornado zones. The organization pointed to the Dual-Objective-Based Tornado Design Philosophy, an engineering design concept that emerged after Tuscaloosa, Joplin, and Moore tornado investigations. The concept adds about $1 per square foot to the cost of construction to improve structural performance, and includes tornado safe rooms for “essential life safety.”
