A survey by the NAHB found that out of 349 single-family builders responding, 5 percent said they built on a lot that had another structure on it before.
This works out to a total of 31,800 single-family teardown starts in 3014. In the West and South regions, teardowns are close to proportional to total construction. Teardowns comprised 3 percent of all single-family starts in the Midwest, and over 6 percent in the Northeast.
