Bozeman, Montana Board Says Easing Building Code Could Help With Affordable Housing

Members of Bozeman, Montana’s affordable housing advisory board say relaxing provisions of the city’s building code could help make housing more affordable. The board says reducing lot size minimums and parking standards, in particular, could have an impact.

City planners are working on a major rewrite of the city’s Unified Development Code and said they need to be cautious when considering changing such well established rules. The affordable housing advisory board also recommended removing restrictions that limit the fraction of a lot a house can occupy, and easing restrictions on accessory dwelling units, or secondary apartments that share a lot with a home.
