Meet “hempcrete,” a building composite that Sustainable Cities Collective says has high elasticity and vapor permeability. The material is made out of hemp shiv (hemp is the English word for the cannabis plant, and the shiv is the inner wooden stem) combined with a lime matrix. Its compressive strength of around 1MPa is more than 20 times lower than low grade concrete, but it is long lasting, does not shrink, and is pest, water, and fire resistant.
