Even a six-figure salary isn’t enough to put a person among the top earners in places like Stamford, Conn., Philadelphia, or Santa Barbara, Calif.
Business Insider found the cities where a household income of $100,000 would still put a resident outside of the top 20 percent of earners.
A household income of $100,000 cracks the top quarter of earners in Salt Lake City, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. But, in Baltimore, a low six-figure salary would only put a person in the top 30 percent of earners.
If you live in the metro areas of Seattle, San Francisco, or Washington, DC, a low-six-figure household income barely puts you among the top half of earners, let alone in the top 20%.
The median household income in the U.S. is $53,889.
