Cohousing is popular in Northern Europe, but is still a fringe option in the U.S. CityLab reports that American Baby Boomers may increase the number of cohousing communities in the States.
About 130 cohousing communities exist in the U.S., according to the Cohousing Association. This makes the figure less than one hundredth of one percent of total housing units, whereas in a northern European country like Denmark, somewhere between 1 and 8 percent of all Danes live in cohousing. A large majority of cohousing communities are being driven by Baby Boomers looking at downsizing when they retire.
