Experts say that changing demographics and homeowner lifestyles "have fundamentally transformed" the American household. Many are extended family, older singles, or home shares requiring more universal design.
Aging-in-place projects designed to offer safety, accessibility, and comfort for older residents seeking to remain independent and at home, are happening regularly, says building contractor Clay Leaf, “As a region with an aging population, I expect more kitchen modification for aging in place.” Bathrooms often get those enhancements first, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune's reporting.
“Our vision of the American household is inaccurate and outdated,” curator Chrysanthe Broikos declares. This has led to homes that don’t fit many buyers’ and owners’ needs ... and lacking the latest features. Modern families, modern technologies, modern maturity and a desire for modern style and comfort may mean a remodel, addition or move in 2018.
