As Election Nears, Democrats and Republicans Turn Their Focus to Housing

With housing prices becoming a major concern for voters, both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are turning their campaigns’ focus to affordability. According to The Washington Post's Early Brief, the Democratic campaign involves building 3 million homes in four years in addition to providing first-time homebuyers with $25,000 in down payment assistance. Trump’s plan, on the other hand, involves reducing housing costs by cutting regulations and using federal land for housing.

If Harris wins, she’ll have a wide variety of Democratic and bipartisan bills that could serve as a starting point for translating her housing agenda into legislation. Harris — or Trump — could also have a path to enacting a housing agenda: Congress is expected to spend months negotiating next year to renew at least part of the 2017 Republican tax law.
