EPA looking at revisions to lead paint rules that could lower costs

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in January proposed revisions to the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule to eliminate the requirement that renovator refresher training have a hands-on component.

The proposal would also extend the recertification deadline for a portion of renovators so they can take advantage of this change. EPA would also eliminate the need to pay accreditation and certification fees in the multiple states where EPA administers the program for Lead-based Paint (LBP) Activities (abatement, inspection and risk assessment).

EPA’s analysis estimates that these changes would enable more than $9 million in cost savings annually throughout the construction industry.
