President Donald Trump signed an executive order calling on the Environmental Protection Agency and the Army Corps of Engineers to repeal or revise the Waters of the U.S. rule.
The rule defined what smaller waterways fell under the scope of the 1972 Clean Water Act. Previously, it had been up to local authorities to identify which smaller streams and wetlands fell under the auspices of the act. The order directs the EPA to begin what will likely be a multi-year process of reviewing the rule, with revisions likely to follow.
