Florida Development Aims To Be Energy Self-Sufficient City

Babcock Ranch in southwest Florida, a development that plans to eventually house 50,000 people, is being billed as the nation’s first solar community.

Built on a former cattle ranch and current wildlife corridor, it will feature microgrids throughout the community, and a 75-megawatt solar farm to be installed by Florida Power & Light. The community will also have gigabit-speed internet connectivity and a shared fleet of autonomous electric vehicles.
