A study of an information campaign to inform Florida residents of the risk of flooding due to sea-level rise produced a surprising result. Residents in high-risk areas rejected the notion that there properties were at risk due to climate change and increased flood risk.
The survey followed an online campaign to raise awareness of increase flood risk by the First Street Foundation through their website FloodIQ.com. This site contains detailed maps showing which areas are at highest flood risk.
Regardless of partisanship, homeowners may have been motivated by their personal financial interests to reject the notion that sea-level rise would reduce their own property values, the study’s author says.
