Craig Fugate, Chairman of Floridians for Safe Communities, and former FEMA Administrator, urged Floridians to keep toughened building codes enacted after Hurricane Andrew.
In subsequent storms, “building codes were the difference between preservation or destruction and, sadly, survivability or loss of life,” Fugate writes. Floridians should reject a set of bills, Senate Bill 7000 and House Bill 901, “which would significantly weaken the state’s current building codes,” he says. Florida, he adds, is the state most likely to be hit by hurricanes.
