A new study found that indoor air quality is worsened by natural gas appliances. The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health study found that after an hour of using a gas stove or oven, levels of nitrogen dioxide reached levels that exceeded state and national ambient air-quality standards.
Nitrogen dioxide is part of a group of gases that contribute to smog formation and are considered harmful to health. The research follows recent studies that have linked air pollution to higher rates of COVID-19 mortality. Inhaling nitrogen oxides poses especially acute risks to children and the elderly.
Residential gas appliances emit an estimated 16,000 tons of nitrogen oxides to outdoor air each year.
