The U.S. Department of Energy held its first Energy Solar Decathlon in 2002 on the National Mall in Washington, and in the years since, thousands of college students have designed and created homes that are efficient and can convert sunlight into usable energy.
This December, the competition will take place in Irvine, Calif., and the public will be invited to tour the homes to see the designs and learn more about the benefits of energy efficiency. The 2015 U.S. competition includes 10 contests in architecture, market appeal, engineering, communications, affordability, comfort zone, appliances, home life, energy balance, and commuting.
