A Zillow research found that regardless of marital status, young adults with full-time employment have driven homeownership rates for their group upward – so what is driving the aggregate homeownership rate downward?
The research finds that changing household structure has played an important role in driving the aggregate homeownership rate among young adults. Zillow simulated how the homeownership rate would have evolved if household structure had not changed over the past decade – married couples where both partners work full time – and found that a change in the distribution of young adults across marriage and labor force participation accounts for the difference in the aggregate homeownership rate since 2000.
