Zillow Real Estate Research found that households in the bottom 20 percent have a homeownership rate of 30 percent, while the top 20 percent of earners made up 87 percent of all homeowners.
The numbers do not reflect the general understanding of the American Dream, where homeownership is a goal no matter how much money one makes.
When looked at the local level, Minneapolis has the highest homeownership rate among middle-income households, at 91 percent. Meanwhile, San Diego has the lowest, at 41 percent.
