More than 60 million Americans, 20 percent of the nation, live in multigenerational households.
The Houston Chronicle reports that Houston home builders, including Toll Brothers and Lennar, are meeting the rising demand. They build homes with features such as private lofts, bedroom suites, kitchenettes, and separate outdoor entries.
Examples of multigenerational housing include young adult children moving back in with parents after graduating from college, and older adults who need assistance moving in with their kids as they age.
As of 2014, Asians (28 percent), Hispanics (25 percent), blacks (25 percent) and whites (15 percent), made up the majority of those who live in multigenerational homes. … "We quickly recognized we would sell homes to a higher percentage of international buyers and we began to design options to accommodate their needs," said David Assid, Houston division president for Toll Brothers.
