Only 51 percent of Americans make up middle-income households in 2013, writes MarketWatch Personal Finance Reporter Quentin Fottrell.
This is a plunge from a 61 percent share in 1970, according to a study by the Pew Research Center. Over the same period, the share of the country that qualifies as lower income has grown, making up 29 percent of all households in 2013 compared to 25 percent in 1970.
