Minneapolis Eliminates Single-Family Home Zoning

Aiming to alleviate a housing shortage, the City of Minneapolis has eliminated all single-family home zoning districts. The city of 428,000 is one of the first and largest in the U.S. to end single-family zoning.

About 70% of Minneapolis’s residential land had been zoned for single-family structures. Proponents of the measure say restricting large urban areas to single-family residences limits the supply of housing, drives up home costs, contributes to sprawl, and reinforces decades of racial inequity. The new regulations allow for triplexes in all areas of the city.
