More than 300 municipalities have received designations from SolSmart, a national program that helps streamline permitting and zoning processes to make solar power easier to obtain for residents and businesses. SolSmart came about through a partnership between the Solar Foundation and the International City/County Management Association.
Communities that contact SolSmart to obtain designation are assigned a technical assistance director that works with the city to walk them through the designation process and provide help. Training typically includes a review of zoning practices and a process to identify barriers to permitting. The program typically examines the language of ordinances and tweaks them to be more customer-friendly.
