More than half (56 percent) of homes constructed in 2014 in the U.S. were built on slab foundations, according to NAHB. Only 28 percent had a full or partial basement and 15 percent had a crawlspace.
Since 2000, the rate of houses built on slab has risen and houses with a basement have dropped.
The figures break down by region. Building codes require foundations to be built at or below the frost line, so in colder areas, where the frost depth is several feet below ground, basements are more common. Basements are popular in the plains states (83 percent have a full or partial), but extremely rare in states near Texas and Arkansas (less than 1 percent have them).
