A new interactive map created by financial site Debt.com lets viewers see at a glance the average debt burden for college students in each state, with the East Coast sporting six of the 10 highest averages.
New Hampshire had the highest average student debt burden in the nation at $32,795, 11 percent above the national average. By comparison, New Mexico has the nation’s lowest average at $18,656; on the other hand, New Mexico’s 20.8 percent default rate is the country’s worst.
