In some sense, Pittsburgh is red hot, drawing in East Coast transplants and native residents who moved away. The city boasts affordable housing, a thriving tech sector, and a renowned arts community.
Yet, Pittsburgh also has a black (and yellow) eye — unemployment is above the U.S. average, real per-capita income is lagging behind the rest of the nation, and, from mid-2014 to mid-2015, the city had 2,520 more people move out than move in.
Justin Fox from Bloomberg explored Pittsburgh’s dichotomy and offered a theory as to why the migration occurred.
