As historic weather events continue to affect the housing market, a new infrastructure strategy is emerging for homeowners, to "own your water."
With a focus on New Orleans' residents affected by flooding and hurricanes, CityLab reports that rather than relying on pumps, homeowners are being encouraged to revamp their front yards with gravel walkways and water-loving plants. This includes taking advantage of the popular reimbursement program offered by The Urban Conservancy's Front Yard Initiative; homeowners replace concrete on their property with permeable materials that soak up and store water before it hits the street.
Based on the blueprint of the Urban Water Plan, advocating storage over flushing water away, the city is actively working toward revenue-building solutions.
