The batteries needed to store a working amount of solar energy today are too big for the average home, but MarketWatch reports Elon Musk is developing a way to make it smaller.
Together with Musk’s first cousin Lyndon Rive, CEO of SolarCity Corp., the two hinted in a closed press conference that the new $5 billion gigafactory, which is providing 6,500 new jobs in Nevada, 50 gigawatts of battery storage by 2020and 500,000 electric cars per year, may be the first of several larger plants. This will eventually lead to the efficiency and affordability of lithium-ion batteries which could power not just the car, but also the home.
