The NAHB shares data from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction. According to the report, vinyl was the most common exterior wall material used in homes started in 2013.
In the report, 31 percent of homes started last year used vinyl, followed by brick or or brick veneer at 24 percent, stucco at 22 percent, and fiber cement siding such as Hardiplank or Hardiboard at 17 percent. However, when broken up into regions, the share of materials varies. For example, more new homes use stucco in the Mountain region, while in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, most new homes use brick or brick veneer.
