Wheaton, Ill. lawmakers ponder heat detector requirement for attached garages

City council also considered smoke detector requirement, dismissed due to high chance of false alarms

The Wheaton, Ill. City Council, which is getting set to enact International Code Council standards to update its building codes, is considering a requirement to install heat detectors in attached garages. The council decided against a requirement for smoke detectors in garages due to activities in garages that might set off alarms. City staff found a report from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that said annually, between 2009 and 2011, only about 2 percent of all residential building fires originated in attached garages.
