The National Association of Home Builders breaks down 2018 Survey of Construction figures from the Census Bureau into construction times for houses built for sale, built by contractor, built by owner, as well as regional breakdowns and time from permit-to-completion within metros and outside metros. Houses built for sale required the shortest time—seven months—while houses built by owners took the longest time at 12.5 months.
