Yes, the construction industry continues to be male-dominated nationally, with women making up only about 11% of the industry's payroll employees in 2022, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. But in some parts of the country, women are making inroads in construction, according to analysis of Census data by Construction Coverage, a reviews website focused on construction insurance and software.

While Alaska and Hawaii lead the nation at the state level for the number of women employed in construction (14.9% and 13.1%, respectively), parts of the Pacific Northwest and South Atlantic also have a greater share of women working in the industry, with all states in those regions employing women in construction at or above the national average.

Similar trends hold at the metropolitan level. Florida boasts the three major metros with the largest female employment share in construction: Jacksonville (16.9%), Orlando (15.0%), and North Port (14.3%). Conversely, areas in California like Bakersfield (8.3%), Oxnard (8.7%), Riverside (9.1%), and Los Angeles (9.1%) are among the lowest ranked metros for female construction employment.
