South-facing solar panels capture the most solar energy throughout the day, but the New York Times reports that that isn’t the most useful.
Instead, west-facing solar panels will capture solar energy when its most needed – in the late afternoon. Though the overall production would fall, energy would be available at hours when it is more valuable, which would be more helpful for the utility and the grid as a whole.
