The one-story ranch house fell out of popularity after its peak in the 1960s and 1970s because of its association with mass-produced tract housing, The Wall Street Journal reports.
But some homeowners still want single-story living, and architects and interior designers are reinventing the low-ceilinged, one-story classic into a bright, airy, and modern sanctuary.
The Wall Street Journal showcases several homes that take design cues from the basic ranch home while adding a modern twist. For example, the home of Greg Ballard, a 61-year-old videogame executive in San Francisco, turned the interiors into an open plan to remove clutter, and installed light-generous windows and sliding doors that go from floor to ceiling.
