A co-housing project called Rocky Corner in Connecticut uses some simple, but powerful design features to boost energy efficiency. Though insulation exceeds code, it is not to the level of passive-house standards. The foundation slabs are heavily insulated.
Houses in triplex and duplex arrangements add to the efficiency of the community due to shared walls. The 30 homes are all electric and use air-source heat pumps for heating and cooling.
A long timeline and unexpected expenses drove up the project’s costs. But, reduced energy expenses, estimated at just $1,000 per year per home, will offset some of the cost over time.
