The NAHB reports that single-family and multifamily homes built from 2004 onward accounted for just 3.2 percent of the energy consumed in the U.S.
In total, disregarding when a home was built, the residential sector overall accounted for 22 percent of energy consumption in the U.S. The NAHB used data from the latest U.S. Energy Information Administration, which looked at total energy used in the residential sector for HVAC only, and then the total energy used. The results show that on a per square foot basis, the newer a single-family detached home is, the less energy it uses.
