The latest Census data from the 2013 American Community Survey found that Millennials and Generation X are leading the change toward a range of alternate modes of transport other than driving.
The Brookings Institution reports that workers ages 16 to 24 – the youngest working Millennials – are commuting the least by car compared to all other age groups. Tucson ranked first nationally in its transit growth among these workers with a 5.5 percentage point rise since 2007. The more university-centric metros see an increase of young workers walking to work, such as Syracuse (+ 3.6 percent), New Haven (+ 2.4 percent), and Austin (+ 1.7 percent).
