New Jersey has spent more than $1 billion to replace or restore homes that were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. So far, of the 4,400 homeowners who have accepted a grant, 3,570 are in the construction process or securing temporary and final certificates of occupancy. The state has approved more than $25 million in zero-interest loans for affordable housing and $12 million in interest-free mortgages to moderate-income, first-time homebuyers.
