Caliwel, an anti-microbial surface coating, has been tested to be 99.9% effective at killing and preventing the growth of more than 20 microbes, including mold and mildew, according to Alistagen, the New York-based biotechnology company that makes the product. Applied like paint, Caliwel can be used on walls, floors, ceilings or any other hard surface, including building materials, and is available in 10 shades.
“We are seeing that 30% of the U.S. population is afflicted with respiratory illnesses — asthma, allergies or some sort of immunodeficiency,” Alistagen CEO Bryan Glynson says. “Caliwel is very effective against fungus and mold.”
The coating contains calcium hydroxide, or hydrated lime — a mineral that has been used for centuries to help control the spread of disease. It is encapsulated to prevent degradation from exposure to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Field tests showed minimal degradation after six years.
Future applications might include HVAC ductwork and rebar or the outside of finished concrete walls to prevent corrosion.
