In Brooklyn, N.Y., a new venture called Brooklyn Microgrid allows those who generate electricity from solar panels to sell excess electricity credits to buyers in the area. Residents and businesses are both eligible to purchase the credits. Organizations like Brooklyn Microgrid would allow participants to bypass the electric company energy supply and build a microgrid with energy generation and storage components that could function on their own, even during power failures.
