Not only are young adults moving out on their own at a later age, but 30-, 40-somethings, indeed a smaller share of adults of every age were living independently in 2017 compared with 1980.
The trend of young adults taking longer to move out on their own has been well documented, but this Zillow Economic Research analysis notes that college debt is not the cause as even people with a high school education, who used to live independently as their college-educated counterparts, are staying home longer.
Zillow looks at what is driving this development by examining factors like social norms, income inequality, and skyrocketing home prices.
