U.S. imposes steep tariffs on Chinese solar panels

The Commerce Department is issuing steep tariffs on solar panels from China after discovering unfair subsidies were being issued by the Chinese government in addition to other infractions.

The U.S. Commerce Department has imposed a collection of steep tariffs on solar power equipment imports from China and Taiwan. The action came after the department found that Chinese manufacturers have been using cells made in Taiwan to avoid tariffs imposed in an earlier ruling. The feds also determined that Chinese companies were selling products below the cost of manufacture and that they were receiving unfair subsidies from their government. The action could drive up the cost of solar panels.
