A new 75-home development in Williamsburg, Va., will be the first in the state to be built to the Zero-Energy-Ready standard. The Department of Energy defines a Zero-Energy-Ready home as being designed to be solar ready and meeting rigorous requirements for energy savings, comfort, health, and durability.
The Williamsburg homes have insulated 2-by-6 inch exterior walls, with a system that creates a thermal break at the exterior sheathing. The homes are also equipped with an energy recovery ventilator that filters the indoor air from pollen and pollution coming into the homes.
