Connecticut, Maryland, and New Jersey are havens for the elite.
Based on a report by GOBankingRates, CNBC named the wealthiest states in the U.S. The rankings are based on seven factors, which include the average income of the top 1 percent, the percentage of the population in upper class, and the percentage of millionaire households.
The top of the list is dominated by East Coast states and Washington D.C. Connecticut was ranked first, in part because 27 percent of the population is considered upper class.
