With the prospect of severe tornadoes and severe wind events differing drastically within some states, codes governing emergency “safe room” shelters can vary. For instance, for much of southern Michigan, a shelter needs to withstand winds up to 250 miles per hour, but in the Upper Peninsula, the standard is 160 miles per hour.
